Touring star mixes old and new

Olivia Newton-John will bring three decades of hits to the Fox Theatre in Detroit at 8 p.m. Thursday. She'll be promoting her new duets CD, "2," but she won't overload the audience with unfamiliar tunes.

"I do the hits because that's why people come," she said on the phone the other day. "I remember that because when I was a young girl I went to see someone who I really admired and she didn't do her hits and I (decided) that I would always do them if I was lucky enough to get to that position."  Besides, she points out, it's not like she tours all the time. And she'll be backed up by an orchestra, which she says will be lovely for her.

Her audience, she says, is an interesting mix of people ages 7-70 -- those who just caught on to the "Grease" phenomenon, those who were fans long before she starred in the famous movie musical and all the fans in between.  Doesn't it bug her that she's most closely associated with a movie released 25 years ago? "Why would it?" she cheerily responds. "It's one of the best things I ever did. It was very exciting and it's still going on."

Newton-John, who survived a highly publicized battle with breast cancer, will celebrate her 54th birthday on Sept. 26.

Her life is pretty full, she says. Besides "being a mother to my daughter (16-year-old Chloe Rose Lattanzi, a budding singer) and a daughter to my mother, who is getting older," she has kept up with the environmental advocacy that has become one of her trademarks. She's excited about the recent Tree Day in Australia, where she participated in planting 2 million trees.

Also in Australia, a cancer research hospital will be named after her, complete with "a healing center within the hospital grounds where people can go and get some help and some meditation and a little peace before and after treatment."

Another of her three big projects is the release of her wine, "Olivia by Olivia," available at
