Xanadu show
Xanadu began as a poet’s paradise. Then it became Charles Fos-ter Kane’s unfinished castle.
In 1980, the name was borrowed for the title of a weightless movie musical to highlight the talents of Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly.
That incarnation will skate its way across the Studio 35 screen for a pair of showings to benefit Ohio Roller Girls, the Columbus “flat-track” roller-derby league that wheels its sport in the Lausche Building of the Ohio Expo Center.
Why Xanadu? Probably because one number features the stars on roller skates.
Still, old opinions die hard.
In his review of the movie, Roger Ebert called the film “a mushy and limp musical fantasy that keeps evap-orating before our eyes.” On the upside, he considered it “not as bad as Can’t Stop the Music.”
