Greg Davis meets the girl from the Toomorrow
group
Livvy is the warm, sincere kind. She has the quality of sex appeal that is liked by women... and intrigues men.
The man who said that was director Val Guest. He was talking about Olivia Newton John, the lovely girl who is the lead singer with Toomorrow
, a new pop group formed for a film of the same name.
For a girl who has all these attributes, Olivia, or Livvy as she is known to her friends, is remarkably modest. Is he talking about me she asked when she over heard Val Guest.
At heart, Livvy is just a warm, fun-loving young girl. She has not the sign of precociousness of stardom, In fact, she looks somewhat embarrassed if anyone mentions the word star in front of her.
When meet she bounced into the room, smiling at everyone, announcing breathlessly Gee, I'm sorry I'm late.
A few minutes later we were seated as a large sofa, talking about Livvy's way of life. I don't feel any different now, just became a few people know my name. I will live just the same.
I asked her if being in the group meant buying lots of special clothes, or if she just dressed the same way as always. She was wearing a casual shirt and a pair of red corduroy trousers, decorated with a shiny wide belt. I still wear things like this,
she said, indicating her clothes with a sweep of her hand. I just love casual gear. I wear it all the time. The important thing is that it looks smart. I know a dressmaker who makes up trousers for me, because my legs are too long to buy them ready-made. That way I get just what I want. The important thing is to have good accessories, that go with whatever you are wearing. A nice bag, a good belt and good shoes make anything look smart.
While she talked, Livvy sat with her hands in her lap, letting her eyes and face make her words more expressive. She has a distinct Australian accent, for she has lived down under
for most of her life.
Where does she buy her clothes? Just anywhere I see something I like. I get a lot of things from small boutiques.
Livvy says that she doesn't spend a great deal of money on her clothes. One week I might go out and buy four sweaters, and then not buy anything else for a month. I buy about three really good things a year - a warm winter coat and maybe a special dress or two-but apart from that, it's just stuff that I can interchange.
We then talked about how Livvy spends her free time. Not for her the life of going to nightclubs and discotheques. At least, not more than once a week,
she said with a smile. I prefer to stay in and watch television. I am a bit of a homebody really. My idea of a really good night is to invite some friends around for dinner, then I can do the cooking.
Is she a good cook? She laughed. I guess so. At least, everyone eats what I dish out.
She doesn't think that she is really a typical twenty-one-year-old. I suppose that it's because of this business. I've spent most of my time with people older than myself, and I just had to grow up quicker than normal. Everyone always expects me to be sort of suave,
she said with a giggle.
As a member of a pop group with a major film to their credit and a record doing very well, Livvy feels very strongly about the pop scene.
In the old days, pop stars were someone special. Now they are just the same as everyone else. There are no heroes for the kids to look up to. When I was a very young teenager I used to go and see a singer and there was something special about it, a sort of aura. They were stars and we looked up to them. Now everything seems so different!
Livvy thinks that Toomorrow will be a success. It is time that the kids had a bit of magic put back into pop music and pictures. They want to see something romantic and colourful, not just an extension of their everyday lives. And after all, think of the ones who have really lasted a long time; Elvis, Cliff Richard, Tommy Steele...
Asked who are her favourite singers, Livvy thought carefully before answering. I just don't know. I like listening to all sorts of music and all sorts of artists. I suppose you could say that Streisand is my favourite.
