Diana Has A Fashion Chat With Olivia Newton-John
Issue 440
USES VERY LITTLE MAKE-UP
What make up do you use?
Very little, Just a touch of blush on the cheeks eye shadow, mascara and lip gloss
Ever design your own clothes?
I used to do a singing act with Pat Carroll wife of John Farrar, who’s with Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch. We used to design our stage clothes together. But that’s as far as I’ve gone.
Ever make your own clothes
No. Simple alterations are my limit
TROUSERS INTO SHORTS!
What clothes do you pack for a holiday in the sun?
Several bikinis. Casual shifts. A couple of dresses
Your oldest items of clothing?
Orange shorts thought in Australia six years ago. They’re right in fashion now!
Which fashion period do you most admire
The Victorian with all those wonderful crinolines, parasols and so on.
The ugliest-ever fashion item?
Wide, baggy trousers for women, think this was in the twenties, I’ve seen them in films.
PORTUGUESE BELTS
How often do you defy fashion!
Not often. I believe in keeping a good basic wardrobe and varying the accessories according to fashion. Also, I’ve had much pleasure in cutting down several pairs of trousers I’ve had for years and producing modern shorts!
Do you wear anything which belonged to your mother or grandmother?</br> No. But I’ve a shrewd ides my mother is keeping some drop earrings with opals and pearls to give me during the next year or two. I can’t wait!
Your best-ever bargain?
A leather mini-skirt and jacket for 48 guineas in a sale-marked down from 70 guineas.
Whose advice do you ask when buying clothes?
Usually I take my fiance Bruce Welch with me. If he’s not free, I take a girl friend, I’m useless on my own.
Your favourite casual wear?
Nice trouser suits-preferably in suede.
And for dressy occasions?
Very feminine dresses - either in voile or broderie anglaise. I don’t like anything glittery. Just plain, nicely cut dresses
MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT
What do you do with your old clothes?
Give them to a charity for old people
Your most embarrassing moment, clothes-wise?
Bending too sharply at a party, splitting my trousers and having to go around holding my handbag against the split. By the way, I’m not embarrassed in the company of a girl wearing the same dress. It’s happened at several parties and I’ve gone up and said, “I’m glad we BOTH have good taste”
Where do you buy your clothes?
I just shop around for my personal ones. Pat used to make my stage clothes for our act When I was in Toomorrow, the group management engaged a dressmaker for me. Now I’m choosing for just the right person for my solo career.
Your favourite colours?
All shades of brown. Beige especially.
What clothes have you bought abroad?
Three beautiful shirts in New York In crepe with a super cut. One beige, one white, one yellow costing about C10 each. I’ve also quite few belts from Albufeira, Portugal. You get them specially made in the village leather shop. There are hundreds of horse collars and bridles hanging there, all with stud designs. You just pick the design you want for your belt.
Are you extravagant about clothes?
In spasms. I splash out £80 or £70 at one geo-then buy nothing for weeks.
Whose dress sense do you most admire?
Faye Dunaway’s.
