If Not For You album review
OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN If Not For You (Festival)
Me and Bobby McGhee; If, Banks of the Ohio: In a Station, Love Song, Help Me Make It Through the Night, It Not For You, Where Are You Going to My Love, Lullabye, If You Could Read My Mind; II I Gotta Leave; No Regrets.
Funny what a hit song will do. In the dishy Olivia’s case it made her a world star, after she’d been singing her head off in both Australia and England for many a year. Being engaged to a Shadow helped her get on to the Cliff Richard TV extravaganza, which helped smooth over the Tomorrow pop group which didn’t happen but Olivia said the manufactured group’s failure helped her grow-up.
“Banks of the Ohio” is a grown-up song, and al-ready doing as much business as “If Not For You.” The rest of the tracks are pretty. emotional, and a bit wound up. It’s not Carole King, but it sure is pretty music.
If not for a hit…
