Olivia Newton-John article Olivia Newton-John article

Olivia Newton-John has just one simple rule when looking after her pretty face. And that is to always remove her eye make-up properly, with something that doesn't damage the delicate skin around her eyes. Baby oil is the product that Olivia uses, and to make sure that the oil doesn't make a horribly smeary effect on her vision afterwards, she gently wipes the greasiness away with cotton wool moistened in witch hazel and rose water.

I just use soap to wash my face in, says Olivia. I don't usually use heavy make up so I don't find that I need to use cleansers. At night I use eye cream either Beeswax from Boots or Revlon's Eterna which is more expensive. I also like to put on a reasonably good night cream too, something like Vitamin A cream which I actually got in America.

Vitamin A is particularly good for skin blemishes, and vitamin E creams, which you can now buy in England, are also a good remedy for spots and acne - together with a good diet of course.

Sometimes I do get spots, Olivia said honestly. That's my main problem caused when I'm tired or spend too many late nights! Then I find that TCP lotion is a good remedy. But it's a mistake to think that because you get spots you shouldn't moisturise your skin in fact when you're getting as old as I am, (said with a giggle, because Olivia is still a sprightly young thing), it's very important. I use Oil of Ulay, which is fairly expensive, but it lasts a long time and is very nice on your skin. When I'm on holiday somewhere hot I use a thicker cream because the sun really does make it much drier... in fact I like to have a brown face, but you can get that in a day, so I keep out of the sun's rays for the rest of the time.

So that's how Olivia keeps her lovely pale look. To add to that pretty effect she uses brown eye shadow all the time, and black mascara.

I don't like any other colour shadow much, although I used to wear blue and green, says Olivia. And really I don't wear a lot of mascara, and I don't wear it all the time. When I do wear make up on my face I just use Revlon's blush and a natural lip gloss which is made by Mary Quant. It just has a slight red tint to it, but I've found it suits me best not to wear brightly coloured lipsticks... you know you've either got to go red lipped or very pale, and that doesn't look good on me.

So by trial and error, though the latter only occasionally, Olivia has developed a beauty look that really does make her look lovely. But beauty doesn't begin and end with facial make up. Olivia has greasy hair and so she washes it every day, and finds that ZPII shampoo is particularly good for her or alternatively she likes a shampoo utilising lemon.

I had some blonde streaks put into my hair just recently too, says Olivia. And I've found that that that helps to stop it getting so greasy. I have my hair cut - and tinted by Martin at Leonards, and I used to go every six weeks, but now I'm letting it grow down and I'll probably only have a trim every six months.

Olivia is looking forward to having long flowing blonde locks, but as she says she will probably have her hair cut again when she loses her tan because with a tan even unshaped hair can look good, but not when that attractive colour fades!

As an additional tip on hair care, Olivia says she uses Carmen rollers to give her hair bounce particularly before she steps in front of the cameras and she prefers the rollers which have a built in conditioner.

On the subject of diet, Olivia says she does eat meat, and though she goes through spells of eating very little and spells of eating till she's fit to burst! - she always tries to eat some citrus fruit every day, as well as an egg, a glass of milk and some cheese.

And as Olivia has a busy schedule to keep to she finds that helps to keep her energy going. She is due to visit her homeland, Australia, where she will be appearing at the opening of a new Opera House, along with her old friend Cliff Richard. Olivia has also been recording a new album and one of the songs on it is actually her own.

Should you like to see Olivia in person, she works frequently in northern cabaret clubs in England but if you're not lucky enough to catch her there, she is always a regular guest on television variety shows. And looking like she does, who can blame any gentleman for inviting her along to brighten up the screen!
