Her Fears Were Unfounded

IT WAS a week of lump-in-the-throat success for two very different singers.

On Monday, Olivia Newton-John started in the first of her TV series and on Wednesday she opened in twice-nightly cabaret at the glossy Las Vegas Hilton.

Miss Newton-John, habituée of fresh-faced Cliff Richard shows, was a bit worried about Las Vegas. “Everyone warned me that Vegas people are tough -they don’t listen to the show. They’re just thinking about the next buck.”

Her fears were unfounded. The darling of the blue-jeans brigade captivated the tuxedo and gem-flashing gamblers of Las Vegas.

She’s a versatile creature. After her Hilton stint, she is touring American State fairs (a kind of Hampstead Heath Bank Holiday cum Roval show) warbling before 40,000 open-air fans.

“Everything just seems to happen,” she says.
