LOS ANGELES (AP) -Blonde Olivia Newton-John and rocking Gladys Knight and the Pips have won four awards each, topping the winners of the American Music Awards.

Miss Newton-John, the Australian-born singer, was presented awards as the favorite female vocalist in the country and pop-rock fields during the nationally telecast show Tuesday night. Her “I Honestly Love You” was selected the best single in the pop-rock category and her album, “Let Me Be There.” was chosen the best in the country music category.

Forty thousand ballots for the contest were sent to homes across the nation randomly selected by a New York marketing firm.

OLIVIA THE GREAT - English -born, Aussie bred singer Olivia Newton John walked off with four American Music awards on television last night despite the fact Olivia probably wouldn’t win any Nashville popularity contest among the country music artists. According to People magazine (Feb. 24), “nobody loves Olivia but the people,” and quotes Olivia as saying “I’ve never claimed to be a country singer… I simply love country music and its straightforwardness.” “Liv” also is in contention for Grammy “record of the year.”
