Preparing to PORTALES take the stage in Eastern New Mexico University’s Physical Education Complex this Sunday (Mar. 2) is the talented Wales singer, Olivia Newton-John.

Miss Newton-John will ap-pear in concert at Eastern at 8 p.m. along with special guest Albert Hammond. Hammond has recorded “It Never Rains In Southern California” and “I’m A Train.”

At the age of 12 Olivia Newton-John entered a local cinema contest to “find the girl who most looked like Haley Mills.” Two years later she and three other girls started a singing group called The Sol Four. When the Sol Four began interferring with school work, the act disbanded and Olivia then began singing on her own in a coffee lounge owned by her sister’s husband.

It was a customer who suggested to Olivia that she enter a contest being held by Johnny O’Keefe, then reigning Australian musical personality and now a television star. Olivia won the contest but could not enjoy her prize, a trip to London, until she finished school a year later.

Happily Olivia stayed in England and recorded her first single, “If Not For You,” in 1971. The song became a hit in the United Kingdon, United States, Canada, Australia, and South Africa.

The first half of this year Olivia Newton-John was touring England and the Continent as well as appearing on every major television show.
