Don't stop believin' she's the best

Olivia Newton-John, the record industry’s hottest item since the Beatles burst upon the music world in the sixties, recently hosted her own television special where she sang her latest hit, “Don’t Stop Believin.”

“Don’t Stop Believin’ is also the name of her latest LP, and while the big hit is side one, tune one material, there are also 0ther choice selections on Olivia’s fifth album.

Released as a single late last year, “Every Face Tells A Story” is a sprite tune and easily the second melody on the album. The tune hasn’t done badly on its own, but it hasn’t begun to reach the heights the title tune did. Mildly forceful, with brash instrumentation, this melody is typically and totally Olivia. Her background vocals, usually all her own, are mixed with other vocalists, and the results are most interesting.

“Hey Mr. Dreammaker” is also one of the better tunes. A combination of two extremes, slow and fast, the music is fun and is sung in the patented Newton-John fashion.

Equally fine singing is evident in the tunes “A Thousand Conversations,” “Compassionate Man,” “Sam,” and “Love You Hold The Key.” The last tune mentioned contains sweet sounding harmonies beautifully sung by the superstar from Wales.

Don’t Stop Believin’ is her best LP to date, edging out her second album If You Love Me Let Me Know for the distinction.
