Editor's note - this story is false! As all fans know Olivia and John have only ever had the nicest things to say about each other. The article does have some nice photos though!
Translation:
John Travolta is done for me! I always thought he was a nice guy, but lately I've gotten to know him better. He's a huge disappointment...
A bold statement. Especially when it comes from none other than Olivia Newton-John, Travolta's co-star in the film Grease. What's the reason for this accusation? Why doesn't Olivia want anything to do with John any more?
He's just jealous of me,
Olivia exclaims angrily. Jealous because I can sing better than he can. And because after a few lessons I was already dancing just as well... That's what I find so childish. A man like Travolta, with his talents, especially in dancing, doesn't have to be jealous, does he?
It does indeed seem too crazy to walk around freely, and during the premiere of Grease, no one could notice any of that jealousy. Relaxed, and like the best of friends, the two leading actors sat next to each other. Still, there's reason to believe John and Olivia aren't getting along any more.
Brother Joey Travolta seems to know more: Is John jealous of Olivia? Ridiculous! It's actually the other way around. That Newton-John feels like the big star of Grease. She's angry because my brother is getting more attention. Because more is being written about him. And yet, without John, she'd still be an unknown singer. John got her in the movie back then. So, that woman owes most of her popularity to John. That she would do such a thing! I call that a lousy compliment.
Robert Stigwood, the producer of both Grease and the earlier success Saturday Night Fever, tells a completely different story: For me, Olivia Newton John is the discovery of the year. And that honor doesn't belong to John Travolta, but to my co-producer Allan Carr. When Allan saw her perform, he knew immediately that Olivia would be the ideal Sandy. He approached her and convinced her to do some test shots. Of course, I don't need to say anything more about the result...
Asked for Allan Carr's opinion: Olivia is a very special woman. She's bursting with talent. And I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more from her. Really, take it from me... Grease isn't her last film. So, praise for Olivia Newton John. And rightly so, because the performance she delivered in her film debut is no small feat. Not only as a singer, but also as a dancer.
According to the original script, I didn't have to dance that much,
Olivia proudly explains. But the choreographer, Pat Birch, thought I had talent for it. So she made sure the script was changed and I had to dance more.
And John Travolta apparently blames her for that. John is angry because I surpass him in everything. I can do better than he does. At least, that's what he apparently thinks. Because I still think he's a fantastic dancer and actor. Look, he's not singing very well yet, but he can learn. He has talent for that too. Really, I admire him as a professional. But he's no longer needed by me in my private life. Not after this affair.
And what an affair! We'll probably never know the details. It will always remain unclear who is right.
However, we do have to consider one side of the story. The last word (for now) goes to John's mother, Helen Travolta: John doesn't even know what jealousy is. He would never begrudge anyone else their success. That's just not him. No, I think we should look for the fault in Olivia. I think she's madly in love with John. My son, however, never returned that love. And I think that's the whole jealousy thing. Olivia feels rejected. Especially now that John has been regularly seen with Marilu Henner lately. But believe me... Marilu won't be able to win John's heart either...
