Editor's note - this story is mostly made up, for example Olivia has never said that she would not get married. Great photos though
Translation:
Grease didn't just bring Olivia Newton-John success. The film Grease meant Olivia Newton-John's big breakthrough to the top. But to reach that top, "Livvie" first had to overcome her frustrations. Because Grease brought back memories she'd rather forget!
The film Grease is an unprecedented success. Teenagers and twentysomethings come to admire their idol John Travolta. Older movie goers go to Grease to reminisce about the 1950s. But those memories aren't pleasant for everyone. For lead actress Olivia Newton-John, it was a time filled with sadness and painful experiences...
I was initially very reluctant to take on that role. When I read the Grease script, all those awful memories came flooding back,
says Olivia Newton-John. She continues: Because the 1950s, in which the film is set, were anything but happy years for me!
A surprising statement from Livvie (as she is called by her friends). When we entered her apartment in her London hotel, we certainly didn’t expect this either. In Grease, romance is king. But romance and happiness were not part of my childhood. When I was ten – that was twenty years ago now – my parents divorced. Believe me, I was very sad about that,
says Olivia, somewhat tensely.
Their marriage had not been going well for a few years. I could tell that as a little girl. But still... when the decision to split was made, I was quite surprised. The divorce came as a shock to me.
Before us sits a woman who finally dares to confess that she still hasn't gotten over a bad experience after twenty years.
An experience that was rekindled by Grease, her big breakthrough as an artist. Okay, I got over my frustrations. Finally, I realized that Grease was the chance of a lifetime. So I played that role. But believe me, there were many times when I really hated it.
Six years after her parents' marriage dissolved, Livvie was dealt another blow. Her sister was also getting divorced. Then I made a solemn vow never to marry. I certainly didn't avoid men. I've been in love often enough. Those are, by the way, the best times of my life,
says Olivia, now clearly less tense. I love being in love. That's why I believe it's better to fall in love twenty times than to get married once! Because when that love ends, it's not as bad as a divorce,
Livvie says candidly. I never get attached to the man I love. Because I know we won't be together forever. But when you get married, that's different. Then you start building a future together. You start a family. And if your marriage ends after ten years, you lose everything. Everything!
Incidentally, it's doubtful whether a man could last long with Olivia Newton-John. Unless it was a man who could and dared to live in the shadow of the beautiful Livvie. Lee Kramer was one of those people,
she admits honestly. Lee served me very well as a manager for several artists. But when we met and fell in love, Lee decided to be just my manager. He arranged everything for me. He always went on tour with me. Lee never missed a single one of my shows. Well, that started to irritate me after a while. When the recording of Grease started and I didn't have time for anything else, I broke up with him.
A drastic decision after a love of five years. And after some prodding, Olivia explains that another factor played a role: John Travolta!
When I met John, I was immediately smitten. Just like the Sandy I play in Grease, I fell in love with him. John has something I've never encountered in any man before.
It comes out somewhat reluctantly. Olivia then concludes with the words: But it never worked out between John and me. What do you expect... a man like Travolta can't stand in the shadow...
of someone else.
Another love that has ended. And a divorce that has caused Olivia a lot more pain than she cares to admit!
