Australians will throw the biggest, loudest and wettest party in their nation’s history this weekend in officially celebrating victory in the America’s Cup series.
The euphoria experienced when Australia II ended the United States’ 132-year ownership of the cup Sept. 26 is still running strong. “It’s really captured the imagination of the Australian people,” said Doug Cunningham, helping to organize the massive welcome for the Australia II crew this Sunday in the western city of Perth.
The crew and sponsor Alan Bond will be honored with a 12-mile parade and a giant welcome in the city’s seafront Main Square, with 2,000 pleasure boats offshore.
Just about every well-known Australian is expected to be among the sizeable chunk of the country’s population in Perth for the celebration.
Prime Minister Bob Hawke, the rock group Men At Work, singer Olivia Newton-John and Australia’s top athletes and scores of national leaders will be there, Cunningham said.
