Olivia's Baby

Translation from Dutch:

After years of silence surrounding Olivia Newton-John, she’s suddenly back. She’s released a brand new LP, a fantastic single is out, and on top of all that, she’s also expecting her first child early next year. We were the only pop magazine to have an exclusive interview with the beautiful singer.

Why have you been in hiding for a while, so to speak? Why have we heard so little from you lately?

ONJ: I made my most successful LP, “Physical,” four years ago. Following that, I toured extensively and did a lot of promotion. Once I had all that behind me, I decided to withdraw for a while and really relax. It was wonderful to lead a normal life again, to do the housework and such.

When did you start recording “Soul Kiss,” your new LP?

ONJ: Over a year ago. I sat down with my regular producer, John Farrar. We chose three songs and recorded them right away. Then we took a short break before recording three more songs. Then I got married.

Tell me about that.

ONJ: Well, Matt and I had been living together for five years and felt it was high time to get married. I absolutely didn’t want a hyped-up showbiz party; I’m not into that at all. We kept it cozy and intimate with a few very good friends and some family. In the evening, everything took place, very romantic with all the fireplaces lit and lots of candles burning. We played a nice quartet, exactly what I wanted. Afterward, we went to Paris for our honeymoon. It’s pretty much my favorite city, and even though it was freezing and raining, we still had a wonderful time.

You’re pregnant now, but there’s no sign of that in the music video for your new single…

ONJ: Yeah, great, huh? Somehow I’ve planned everything perfectly. Just before you found out I’m expecting, we had a photo shoot and filmed a few clips. Now I can just relax and unwind until the baby arrives.

When are you expecting it?

ONJ: January, February or so. I’m dreading it. I don’t know anything about children, but I do read a lot about them. I’m eagerly anticipating the birth. That event will be the most important one in my life. And if possible, Matt and I will have another one afterward. I want my child to have a little brother or sister, so it’ll never be lonely.

Why weren’t you at Live Aid, by the way? Weren’t you approached?

ONJ: Yes, absolutely. And I was really looking forward to it, but unfortunately, I was already pregnant, and to be honest, that’s why I didn’t dare fly to New York. Of course, I did donate. I was completely behind it.

What are your plans for next year?

ONJ: My best friend Nancy and I came up with an idea for a comedy. We put it down on paper and sold it to Paramount, who are now having someone write the script for the film that will be made next year. Hopefully, I’ll play the lead role in that film and probably also write the soundtrack. That sounds like fun! But anyway, first the baby. Then we’ll see…
