Olivia Newton-John Soul Kiss

Madonna’s two year long stranglehold on the charts almost makes you forget that Olivia Newton John predates her as a sex kitten. The main difference between the two is that Newton-John can sing and usually comes across as sultry instead of sleazy.

Indeed, while Madonna takes pride in describing something everyone knows she is not (Like A Virgin), Newton-John’s Soul Kiss is sensual and suggestive.

It’s a varied set, ranging from slow, sexy numbers like Emotional Tangle and the title track to upbeat synth pop (Driving Music) to quasi-reggae (Toughen Up). Producer John Farrar adds some nice touches, especially the typewriter as-percussion-instrument in Queen Of The Publication

Newton-John and new hubby Matt Lattanzi expect their first child in early ‘86. Soul Kiss should yield enough hits to keep the tot in diapers and diamonds for a while.
