The Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Mostafa K. Tolba, announced today the appointment of Olivia Newton-John as UNEP Goodwill Ambassador.

With her appointment, Ms. Newton-John joins such other Goodwill Ambassadors as actor Max von Sydow and Almad Obeidat of Jordan. Her appointment comes at a time of increased growing public concern for the environment and considerable pressure on the United Nations to initiate action and to keep the public abreast of the latest developments.

In the tradition of Goodwill Ambassadors, Ms. Newton-John, a long-time advocate for the environment, will help promote United Nations goals and activities in dealing with environmental issues. She has been involved in environmental causes since the late 1970s. der two-year tenure as UNEF Goodwill Ambassador will culminate in her participation in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Brazil, June 1992). She will also undertake goodwill missions, including an official visit to UNEP’s Nairobi headquarters in August, where she will lead a “Celebrity Safari”.
