While there’s too much missing from this so-called Essential Collection, Olivia does have the material to back-up a greatest hits set. And the four new cuts, especially “I Need Love” and “Deeper Than a River,” are exceptional. Basics should’ve been a two-disc set, but it’s still a pleasure from start to finish. (Geffen)
