Stop This Madness
Tireless environmentalist Olivia Newton-John has pleaded with NSW Premier John Fahey not to destroy a national treasure.
After years of travelling the world defending the environment, the dedicated greenie is now fighting a desperate battle on her doorstep.
Olivia has thrown herself passionately into the fight to save Ferngully, a waterhole dubbed the last rainforest, near her retreat in Byron Bay on the NSW north coast.
In an emotional video message. Olivia told Mr Fahey she was horrified to learn his government was reconsidering a plan to build a dam in the Federal Valley. She says: “The Federal Valley is one of Australia’s unique rainforest areas and the construction of a dam in this area would not only kill (it) but more than 31 rare and endangered spe-cies of flora and fauna as well.”
“It seems a waste of taxpayers money to rob nature of its treasures. Water can be pumped from the existing dam for far less money and destruction of nature.”
Olivia ends by imploring the Premier: “Please use your power to put a stop to this madness before it is too late.”
The video was shot at Wilsons Creek, near Byron Bay, the spot Dianna Young wrote Ferngully…… The Last Rainforest, an animated feature film with a strong environmental message.
