When to TEST?

h2>

After my battle with breast cancer, I am a great believer in regular health checks of all kinds.

Cholesterol tests are vital for the early detection of certain illnesses.
When:
Every five years, or more often if you have high blood pressure, a family history of heart disease or high cholesterol, or are a heavy smoker.
Why:
High cholesterol increases your risk of heart disease and strokes.
Next step:
If it’s high, you will be monitored and advised to switch to low-fat foods, such as skim milk. If you have an inherited metabolic disorder, you may be prescribed drugs.

Yoga

I used to do a lot of yoga, which is fantastic for keeping your spine supple. It’s something I am dying to get back into because it also helps me relax.

BEAT the EXERCISE barrier

I enjoy exercising, even if it’s just a walk around the block with my four dogs. But for some people it’s a chore. According to the Healthwise Handbook website (www.betterhealth.com/healthwise), there are seven barriers to exercise that are easy to beat.

No time? Try shorter periods of activity spread throughout the day, such as three 10-minute walks.

  1. Too tired? Lack of exercise may be making you tired.
    2 Exercise gives you energy.
  2. Embarrassed? Many people are at first. Be proud Sthat you’re doing something for your body.
4 No partner? Sure, it’s more fun to exercise with a pal. If your regular exercise partner quits, find another one, but make sure you both have the same goals.
6 Bad weather? Too hot, too cold, too wet, too windy for some people it’s never the right time. Try a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.
  3. Too costly? You had to let the gym membership expire. You panic at the cost of running shoes. But can you afford not to exercise? Try walking!

A passion for PINEAPPLES

Fortunately, I love fruit and try to eat at least two serves a day. Pineapples are one of my favourites.
