What Is Life review

What Is Life (Pye 7N25575-stereo)

Olivia seems to be having a musical love affair with George Harrison for this is the second song she has taken from his album. Mind you, I blame her not at all, particularly when she manages to fully vindicate herself with a splendid treatment.

I make no bones for having been half-hearted about Olivia’s talent in the past. I didn’t rate the singing on ‘If Not For You,’ and thought ‘Ohio’ ghastly cornball. But this is something else.

For a start it is a great song and fiance Bruce Welch has kept the feel and style of the Harrison arrangement. It also presents a new powerful Newton-John revealing a lady whose voice does have quite considerable range and depth, particularly on the choruses. This will be a large and deserved hit.
